Compensation for fatal accident at work- Fall from heights

The co-worker, 65 was fatally injured whilst taking part in work at a nearby business when he fell from a second level of a building through an opening to the basement about eight metres below him.

It is believed the deceased was among another worker who was passing a piece of material from the ground up to the deceased on the second floor. It is believed the deceased at the time of the accident was pulling a board onto the floor when he fell through a hole in the floor and landed in the basement which had been cut for a stairwell.

The hole was supposed to be covered with plywood but the deceased and the worker had used it to finish the sub floor when they realized they were short on material, so they never had any other material they could have used to cover the hole up.

The deceased failed to wear a harness when taking part in this work, even though the company he was employed by did not tell him to wear a harness and to only wear one when on the roof.
